The Red Dog Saloon, formerly “The Maxx” and formerly “Elliot’s”, provides a truer bar atmosphere that sometimes seems lacking amongst Ghent’s other food and drink establishments. The bar wraps completely around the interior of the restaurant with tables and booths situated along the walls and windows. The outdoor seating conveniently lines Ghent’s lifeline of Colley Avenue. Even in cold weather, people can be seen dining and drinking outside as they keep a curious eye on the people and cars going by on the street. Three pool tables inside are almost constantly in use from the time the doors open each day until the last person leaves.

The bar is certainly a favorite hangout for students and twenty-somethings in the local area because of the generous food and drink specials combined with the chill atmosphere that pervades the entire establishment even on busy weekends. The staff here always works to keep your drink full and like most bars in Ghent takes care of their regulars quite well.

The menu at the Red Dog Saloon sports a wide variety of relatively inexpensive but well made food. The owners run a catering business out of the kitchen during the daytime before turning the establishment over to restaurant and bar business at night. Burgers, tacos, hot dogs, and a plethora of appetizers can be found on special various nights of the week. The menu is not all just your typical bar food either – pastas, shrimp dishes, and grilled cheese sandwiches add to the selection of dishes. Specials on Prime Rib served with salad, potatoes, and garlic bread have appeared from time to time and always please the appetite.

The Red Dog Saloon was participating location on both the 2006 Ghent Summer Bar Tour and the 2006 Ghent Winter Bar Tour. All proceeds from the events benefitted the Make-A-Wish Foundation® of Eastern Virginia (local Hampton Roads chapter).
