San Antonio Sam’s opened in 1991 and has won the “Best of Norfolk” readers choice award for best Tex-Mex food nearly every year since. The interior sports an old western theme and outdoor seating is available in warmer weather on their patio along Colley Avenue, where your pet is allowed to join you if you feel so inclined. The casual atmosphere invites people to come, to stay, and to come back again.
Several patrons at Sam’s come in more than once in a given week and the friendly staff has quickly gotten to know them by more than just their name.
Sam's offers a wide selection of food, specializing in Tex-Mex (especially chili) but also serving some southwestern flavor in vegetarian, American, barbeque, and steak dishes. The flautas are a local favorite. And if drinks are what you’re looking for, the bartenders at Sam’s know how to mix them well. There are several beers on draft, many more in the bottle, and if you’re feeling particularly adventurous ask the bartender for the “shot of the day”. This daily special is no longer advertised as it once was but most of the staff still responds to its call. The restaurant is also now open on Sunday for brunch.
San Antonio Sam's was a participating location on the 2006 Ghent Winter Bar Tour. All proceeds from the event benefitted the Make-A-Wish Foundation® of Eastern Virginia (local Hampton Roads chapter).
