A staple for family dining on Norfolk's 21st Street for decades, The New Belmont is a popular Ghent hangout for both fine dining and the casual bar scene. Nestled between a record shop and a cleverly named refinishing business (The Strip Joint), the attractively renovated building sports a brilliant mustard yellow brick façade.
The stone tiled foyer inside leads patrons into an exposed-brick gallery of modern photo art filled with white-clothed tables, setting the stage for a pleasant dining experience. The wait staff is friendly and attentive and the atmosphere in the dining area is quite conducive to conversation.
The chefs at the New Belmont cook up creative fare on a seasonally changing American menu highlighted by Cornish hens, pork and lamb loins, chicken, steak, and fish. There is something for everyone here, ranging from coriander-crusted tuna loin to a simpler Belmont bacon-cheddar burger.
Upstairs the more casual bar has a light menu, pinball, a pair of pool tables, and occasional live music. It’s a great venue for special occasions, entertaining guests, or just a neighborhood outing.
The walls here are also decorated in gallery format with quirky mixed-media by local artists. Twenty-somethings come casually dressed for drinks, dining, and the occasional rock show.
The New Belmont specializes in many wines from around the globe while still keeping their list affordable - on Mondays, all wine bottles are half price. Several beers are always on top behind the large bar upstairs as well.
The New Belmont was the ending location on both the 2006 Ghent Summer Bar Tour and the 2006 Ghent Winter Bar Tour. Many thanks to the Belmont staff for their support of the events and the "closing ceremonies" held at their upstairs bar. All proceeds from the events benefitted the Make-A-Wish Foundation® of Eastern Virginia (local Hampton Roads chapter).
